5 Ways to Cook Vegetables

Imahe
Preparing vegetables will always demand some extra time and care. However, these days we're all trying to get more vegetables into our daily lives. Knowing more general ways to cook them only works in our favor. The transformation from raw to cooked never ceases to inspire and once you learn the overall cooking processes, you can tackle any vegetable like a pro. Below is just a start of ways you can experiment with vegetables but hopefully this inspire more vegetable cooking in your kitchen. Blanching Blanching is a quick cooking process that involves submerging vegetables in boiling water for a short period of time. This process helps vegetables lose that extreme crispy bite that might be too much for some meals. Blanching works great for items like asparagus, broccoli and cauliflower but can also be great for greens. How to blanch To blanch, bring a pot of salted water to a boil with a bowl of ice water nearby. Drop in your prepped vegetables and let them cook for only a few minu...

Custom Cabinets For Master Bathroom

When it comes to deciding what kind of cabinets you want to put in your kitchen or bathroom, we always tell our customers that the options are endless!  Where To Find Your Inspir ation You can look around on the internet at Houzz , Pinterest, or any picture from anywhere, and we can make it happen!  Recently we had a homeowner who found a particular cabinet she loved on Houzz. This particular cabinet had drawers with lots of space on the bottom while still having large enough cabinets to use for plumbing and storage. We were able to build these for her. We made the doors with a soft close option, and the whole thing looks fantastic.  Custom Cabinets Vs. Prefab This was a custom build, so we actually built the entire cabinet to fit the exact size of her bathroom wall. You don't get that kind of fit with a prefab cabinet. The problem with a prefab cabinet is that you have to adjust it to the size of the space you have available. You often have to add fitters on the sides and in the m...

Imahe
It's easy to find a bathroom in disarray, after all it's one of the smallest rooms in the house that's also used by everyone and guests. Thankfully, there are some bathroom organization ideas that can help shape up your small space! "People are stuck with a lot of clutter and disorganization going on in their bathroom, because they're in and out fast and don't take the time to put things away," said Susan Stone , a professional organizer in New England. If you're ready to create an organization system to keep your bathroom clutter at bay, keep reading for some great bathroom organization ideas from Stone and another professional organizer! Your space and morning routine will be in order in no time. Only Store Everyday Essentials in a Bathroom If there are items you don't use every day – such as cold medicine or 20 rolls of toilet paper – then it should be stored in a linen closet or storage space outside the bathroom, said Sara Barba of XOXOrganizi...

Nine Healthier One-bowl Baking Recipes

Imahe
One bowl baking is the best. Even better if you can hand mix the batter. Dragging a large mixer onto the counter and then washing and wiping it down, is an effective deterrent. With a lot of these you're literally five minutes from having a cake ready to go in a pre-heated oven. 1. One-Bowl Yogurt and Honey Olive Oil Cake – (The Kitchn) My favorite kind of cake – humble and unfussy, simple and balanced. Honey-sweetened, and flecked with thyme, I love that it can swing from sweet to savory. Get the recipe here. 2. One Bowl Banana Bread – (101 Cookbooks) The laziest one bowl banana bread I know of. Made with whole wheat flour, bananas, dark brown sugar, and coconut milk. Get the recipe here . 3. 1-Bowl Vegan Chocolate Cake – (Minimalist Baker) Just look at that cross-cut. Looks really good. Made with whole wheat pastry flour, almond milk, and strong brewed coffee. Get the recipe here . 4. Kim Boyce's Whole Wheat Gingersnaps – (3191 Mies Apart) Hard to go wrong with a Kim Boyc...

My Newly Refinished Wood Bathroom Countertop (And A Peek At The New Cabinet Color)

Imahe
I've been spending the last couple of days working on my hallway bathroom makeover that I mentioned earlier this week. I should have it finished up this weekend and be ready to move on to other projects. But y'all, I'm pretty excited because after years and years of struggling with staining pine, I think I've finally found the magic method for getting rid of those hideous (to me) orange and yellow undertones that come through when you put stain on pine. I've had a love/hate relationship with pine for well over a decade now. I love it because it's cheap and abundantly available. But I hate it because getting it just the right color with stain is virtually impossible. But my pine-staining woes may be a thing of the past! This bathroom countertop is one that I built from 2″ x 3″ pine lumber four years ago when I remodeled this hallway bathroom. I had such a hard time getting the finish right and getting rid of all of those orange and yellow undertones in the wood t...

Simple Green Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette

Imahe
Every cook should know how to make a simple side salad and lemon vinaigrette. It's the easy side dish to pair with just about any entrée, comes together in 10 minutes with simple ingredients , and is incredibly versatile. Let me show you how it's done. Start with a base of greens. We went with spring greens, but I also love spinach as a base, as well as thinly sliced kale, arugula, and romaine. How to Create an Inspiring Home Office Space

Imahe
With the start of a new year, it seems like one of the first tasks we look to is making space for productivity and fresh inspiration. A home office is one of those things that so many of us would benefit from, but can't seem to find the square footage for. The good news is that whether you have just one small corner of your den to work with, or an entire designated room, you can carve out a workspace that's all your own just about anywhere you can place a desk. (Sourcebook-1) First, Consider the Purpose of Your Office Space Before choosing a spot to set up, it's important to ask yourself what you'll need to accomplish in your office area. Will you need a lot of room for organizing and storing files? Or will you simply need a spot to park your laptop? Knowing this will help you determine how much space to budget for. (Sourcebook-2) Choose Your Space + Lighting Ideally, natural light would be key, so look for an open space near a window first. If that isn't an option ...

Things Are Getting Homier At The Duplex!

Imahe
Last month we shared how refinishing the floors at the duplex made us feel like we turned a major corner at a house we've been renovating for over a year (remember when it looked like this ?!). And now we are firmly in "the fun part!" You know, where you get to start bringing in rugs and light fixtures and furniture and accessories so it goes from looking like a construction zone to an actual home. It's THE. BEST. Especially after months and months of expensive improvements that you don't even see when the drywall goes back up (like plumbing and electrical upgrades). So let's just get right into it. Behold, this wall of the left side's master bedroom that we pretty much rebuilt from scratch: bench / similar light / similar rug / walls: SW Spare White / doors: SW White Truffle That rug is the one we originally bought for the pink house's living room ( you can see it there in this post ) but it often looked too dark paired with our dark sectional. Decisions, Decisions… More of What to Keep When You Remodel the Bath!

Imahe
Bathroom remodeling is filled with difficult decisions, and sometimes the first ones are the hardest… like what to let go and what to keep! We shared some ideas with you recently , and now we're back with part two, via The Recorder Online , to help you decide what to keep when you remodel your bath! Tired of the tub? We relayed the advice about what to do with your jetted tub – namely, get rid of it. But that doesn't mean just ban the bath! Think twice, or even three times, before you consign a cast iron, claw foot bathtub to the dump. This type of vintage fixture is likely to be harder wearing than any modern bath and never goes out of style. The outside of a clawfoot tub can often be painted to match your other decor. And the inside, if it has seen better days, may be a candidate for reglazing. Don't get sunk at the sink! Even if your sink is functional, it can be… well… less than ideal. Who else hates it when the bathroom counter is a-slosh with water? After every. Singl...

CHOCOLATE PEPPERMINT SHORTBREAD

Imahe
We went out last night to pick up a tree. The kids were bundled and the packing blanket was in the back to protect the roof. This is the first year both of the kids are super jazzed about the holidays. Curran (4.5) is excited for new toys and allllll the colorful, tacky decor. I am told every day that the white lights we have on the house are NOT festive AT ALL. Cleo is excited about whatever Curran is excited about lately, so anytime we see lights (trees, wreaths, fake reindeer, whatever) squealing ensues. It was cute at first, and now it's just… loud. But truly, I love it. The first few years of parenting are so much work, with few of those personal connections where you actually get to see your children as a people. The more I get to know them, the more I like them. Even the complicated, emotional parts. Anyway, their excitement is infectious, and their Scrouge McWhite-Christmas-Light-Preferring mother is even considerin...
